Brigadier Mishak Mkhabela

Brigadier Mishak Mkhabela is a senior South African Police Service ballistics expert. He trained at the SAP Academy in Graaff-Reinet and qualified as a ballistic expert at the Forensic Science Laboratory. He served as Provincial Head of the Forensic Science Laboratory in KZN, later led the ballistic section in Port Elizabeth around 2010, and headed the IBIS section in Silverton from 2014. In January 2024 he was promoted to Brigadier and appointed National Head of Ballistics. Before the Commission, he stated that he only became aware during the testimony that another analyst had recovered a serial number that had previously been unrecovered. He also described his process for investigating complaints and noted that member work notes are stored in case files.
