Philani Zungu
working for the accused persons handlers or themselves, or the accused person themselves
Philani Zungu is a South African police officer whose conduct came under scrutiny during the commission’s proceedings. Identified as a member of the Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS) of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), he was described in testimony as an individual allegedly working with a cartel. He was also said to have been present in court alongside another officer, Johnny, as part of a group sent to monitor investigators, with allegations that the two were surveying proceedings on behalf of accused persons or their handlers. Later testimony referenced calls from Warrant Officer Zungu relaying information about an incident involving a killing and arrests, as well as confirming an ID number provided to him.
