Colonel Matthys

Colonel Matthys is a South African police officer whose conduct came under scrutiny during the commission’s proceedings, particularly through the testimony of Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi. According to that account, Matthys was involved in a drug and ammunition discovery, describing the find as possession of illegal ammunition and a drug substance. Mkhwanazi’s testimony also placed Matthys at the centre of a contentious episode involving the Acting Head of Corrections, who was reportedly taken to a garage outside the facility. Matthys was further described as suggesting that the acting head could simply jump over a low fence to reach a dustbin within the compound, a remark that raised questions about the handling of the situation.
