Mr Mampane (senior)

Mr Mampane (senior) is a figure who surfaced in the commission’s proceedings primarily through the testimony of others, where he was depicted as a persistent and, at times, insistent interlocutor. He was described as having a keen interest in the President and the Government of National Unity’s decision to have the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the IPID investigate the National Commissioner, General Khumalo. Counsel’s questions painted a picture of a man who made a very specific request regarding a pending tender for which he had applied, after being sent a list of bidders and bid prices. He was also quoted as sending a message urging, “Boetie, please let him say no to that appointment,” a request that was the subject of scrutiny over its timing and context, particularly whether it could have been sent after the tender’s cancellation, which was disputed.
