Ms Kohler Barnard

Ms Kohler Barnard is a veteran South African parliamentarian whose dual committee roles placed her at the centre of scrutiny during the inquiry. As a member of both the Portfolio Committee on Police, which oversees the public police account, and the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence, which handles covert funds, she was described by testimony as uniquely positioned to call the Department to account on the appropriate platform. However, the same testimony accused her of participating in breaking the law and fuelling malicious attacks within Crime Intelligence, allegedly directed at its head, Khumalo. It was suggested she had a legal obligation to raise concerns through the Joint Standing Committee rather than publicly.
