Barry Bateman

Barry Bateman is a South African journalist whose interactions with legal figures came under scrutiny during the commission’s proceedings. Testimony described him as a journalist at the time of his communications, with Captain McLean recounting a conversation Bateman had on 5 September 2022 regarding a colonel’s statement, as well as a series of WhatsApp messages Bateman sent to Advocate Gerrie Nel detailing a separate conversation with Advocate Johnson. McLean indicated he saw nothing unusual in Bateman sharing that information and had no reason to question Johnson’s integrity. Later questioning by Advocate Baloyi SC probed the timing of Bateman’s communications, specifically whether he had spoken to a party after the investigation became known, though the record leaves the nature of that exchange unresolved.
